In writing, as with anything, you generally have to start on the bottom rung and navigate your way to the top. As you venture in, unless extremely lucky, it’s unlikely you’ll get paid much for your writing—be prepared for this. You might start to make headway only to find yourself brought down a notch. Despite having just made the path to writing success sound like a woebegone, country ‘love-gone-wrong song’ what I’m about to share is how to build a writing portfolio in a way that will strategize visibility and showcase your creative process so you can earn a decent and possibly fabulous living—ALL FROM YOUR WRITING!
Here is a list of simple steps to follow that will help you not only build a writing portfolio, but the beginning of your Platform for Success.
Platform for Success:
- Build a Free Blog Site, which mimics a Web Site quite well. At the least, it gets you out there in the public eye… publishing and producing. “Build it and they will come.” Hmmm. Where has anyone heard that? Even in Field of Dreams, if there was no attention drawn to the lunatic building in a field in the middle of nowhere, it might have gone unnoticed. So kick up some dust and let people know you are there. There are plenty of platforms and although some are easier to navigate then others, Word Press (at this time) is still the safest way to go about it.
- There is a website called fiverr.com. You can create a free listing of something you would do for a” fiver” You can add other amounts, but if you are just getting started, it is a good way to get initial clients/customers and although you may think you are making chump change, it’s a start in building your reputation. . For example you might create a gig stating: ‘I will write a small Ad for you to use, royalty free.” OR, “I will write a 500 word blog post for your small business website.” Either is a great way to start garnering attention. If you are good, like with Field of Dreams…they will come back.
